High School Seniors

The Counseling Office at Lone Star College–CyFair is here to help make your college journey as successful as possible. Listed here are some helpful hints to make your transition a little easier.

While you are still in high school:

If you have any type of disability that required testing by a diagnostician, if at all possible, retest during your senior year. This type of documentation is only valid for a 5 year period. The college does not provide the service of testing. Therefore if you test during your senior year, your documentation should last you through the majority of your college career.
Apply for admission. This is the first step in attending Lone Star College–CyFair. You may do this during the spring semester of your senior year. You do not need to meet with anyone to fill out an admissions application. It’s free and can even be done online! Go to http://www.lonestar.edu/ and click on ‘admissions application’.
Contact the Cy-Fair Counseling office, at 281-290-3260 to start your process early, preferably around April or May of your senior year. If we work together in advance, we can make certain that all the resources you need will be on campus when you begin class.
When you meet with a Counselor

Bring your most current documentation with you. In order to determine and provide classroom accommodations to you, we must have current documentation.

Learning Disability: submit a copy of the most recent diagnostic testing which summarized the diagnosis of the learning disability and the student’s eligibility for special services. This should include intelligence and performance test scores. (ARD information is not necessary.) This documentation can not be older than 5 years.
Physical Disability: submit a signed statement by a licensed professional, on that person’s letterhead, whose license or credentials are appropriate to diagnose the disability (e.g. ophthalmologist for visual impairment, physical therapist for motor impairment). The statement must indicate the disability for which special accommodations are being requested. This documentation can not be older than 1 year.
Other Disability: submit a signed statement from a licensed medical professional, on that person’s letterhead, whose license or credentials are appropriate to diagnose the disability. This area will include emotional, mental and neurological disabilities (e.g. ADD, Tourettes Syndrome). This documentation can not be older than 1 year.
Prior to registering for classes you will need to take the THEA test (or approved alternative such as Compass or ASSET). All students, including those with disabilities, need this testing to attend Lone Star College–CyFair. There are no 504 / ADA exemptions for THEA.

The Counselor will assist you with arranging any accommodations you may require for testing. As a reminder, it is important you meet with a Counselor as early as possible.

Once testing is complete, an advisor or counselor will assist you in selecting your courses.

We look forward to having you at Lone Star College–CyFair. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the Cy-Fair Counseling Office at 281-290-3260 or contact us via email at cyfair.counseling@lonestar.edu
