LSC-CyFair captioning service is a speech-to-text system for providing communication access and notes to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, or who otherwise cannot access auditory information adequately.

To provide Communication Access to these individuals, the captionist listens as the instructor or other person speaking. She/he then uses special abbreviation-expansion software and types a detailed meaning-for-meaning presentation of the lecture and/or discussion, at it happens, in "real time". The individual can then read the text and follow along with the class, lecture or meeting.

The second part of the process are the Notes that were taken in the class or meeting. The captionist edits the text file to correct typos ad remove any extraneous material. The reader then gets a copy of those notes for review and study.
