Lone Star College–CyFair Language Labs
CALL Training Program
The Language Labs offer a program of C.A.L.L. (computer assisted language learning) training and professional development for instructors and tutors in the languages we serve. Check this page periodically for announcements on upcoming training sessions.
Sessions are listed for enrollment through MyWorkshops, the college system's means of listing and registering for all sorts of training. Registration through MyWorkshops is mandatory for all FALL and SPRING training and orientation settings. All language faculty are strongly encouraged to attend one lab intro and one Sony training per year. Attendees who do not register in MyWorkshops will not receive handouts & other distributed materials. All attendees must take the initiative to sign in upon arrival for attendance to be marked & recorded appropriately. We cannot take your word that you attended a given session, as sign-in sheets in conjunction with the attendance marking feature in MyWorkshops are our only way of keeping track of those in attendance at the many training opportunities we provide you. The language lab intro session and the Sony session are strongly recommended. All sessions are announced well in advance, so please plan your personal and extra-professional commitments accordingly. Instructors wanting to use the labs should plan to attend both a lab intro session and a Sony session at least once a year. Attendance at most language lab training sessions usually results in our providing you extra "VIP" services!
If this is your first time logging in, searching for, and registering for sessions in MyWorkshops and you are experiencing difficulties, please call the Lone Star College-Online help desk (distance.learning@lonestar.edu). Their hours are Mon-Thur: 8am - 10pm , Fri & Sat: 8am - 5pm, & Sundays: 1pm - 5pm (livehelp and email only). Phone: 832.813.6700; 936.273.7600; metro 281.765.7765. We urge you to call these numbers as soon as possible if you are having difficulties with MyWorkshops. Again, please call 832.813.6700 for login assistance.
Attendees in need of a sign language interpreter are asked to make appropriate and timely arrangements with Deaf Student Services at cfinterpret@lonestar.edu / 281.290.3206 TDD / 832.482.1014 Office phone.

Upcoming Training Sessions
» Tongue Tech 101: Intro to the Lone Star College–CyFair Language Labs
Tuesday, August 19, 4-5:30pm
In this workshop, all faculty & tutors in ASL, ESOL, & world languages will be introduced to the basic features, policies, & use of the Lone Star College–CyFair Language Labs, a special language technology resource available by reservation and also for open lab visits to students currently enrolled in a language course at Lone Star College–CyFair. Attendees will explore the layout of student stations, longstanding & new software available in the lab, features of the lab web page, reservation procedures, & general lab rules. Attendees will be given materials for use in the incorporation of technology in their courses, and semester reservations will be accepted. Please register in MyWorkshops. Presenter: Georges Detiveaux.
Note to VIPs: We will create lab accounts for your students AHEAD OF TIME and provide you with personalized cards to distribute to each student. As a lab intro VIP, we will also be happy to burn the contents of your LESSONS folder at any time onto CD. We will also gladly print any PDFs & other documents your students save for you in your LESSONS folder at any time. (Faculty who do not register through MyWorkshops & attend once a year must use class time to have us guide students through account creation, and they must save & print their own files).
» Music to Your Ears: Basic Operation of Sony Virtuoso & Soloist Software
Tuesday, August 19, 6-7:30pm
In this training session, those teaching ASL, ESOL, & world languages will be introduced to the basic operation & features of the Sony/SANS software at student and teacher stations in the Lone Star College–CyFair Language Labs. Please register in MyWorkshops. Presenter: Georges Detiveaux.
Note to VIPs: Using a roster with first names, last names, & ID numbers for every LSC-CyFair language class you teach, we will gladly create a Sony roster for each class. That way, students don’t have to do as much log in work at each class-time lab visit. We will also be delighted to burn the contents of your DROPBOX onto CD at any time. You will also receive VIP invitation notice about upcoming specialized Sony training. (Faculty who do not register through MyWorkshops & attend once a year must handle their own files, and will not receive VIP invitation notice about upcoming specialized Sony training).
» Telling You More About Tell Me More: Incorporating Auralog Software into Your Language Course
Friday, August 29, 2-4pm
In this session, attendees will learn all about Tell Me More for Arabic, English, French, & Spanish. Come & learn all about customizing this exciting software to meet the specific aims of your course, including login, the self-registration process, the program's two learning modes, navigation within the program, activity exploration, student performance evaluation, feedback options, the tutor tools, monitoring of recordings, progress charts, & exporting results into HTML. Register in MyWorkshops. Presenter: Georges Detiveaux.
Note to VIPs: Using a roster with first names, last names, & ID numbers for every LSC-CyFair Arabic, ESOL, French, or Spanish class you teach, along with the reg number for your class, we will happily create Tell me More accounts for all of your students ahead of time (each student will get a personalized account card), and this will save you valuable class lab visit time for actual language learning! We will also be delighted to export your class data & scores from the Tutor Tools, and send those data to you at your request. You will also receive notice of upcoming specialized Tell me More training. (Faculty who do not register through MyWorkshops & attend will need to use class time to have us guide their students through account creation, and they must access their own Tutor Tools data, that is, if they even have a Tutor Tools account. They will also not receive VIP invitation notice about upcoming specialized Tell me More training).
» Tongue Tech Tool Time: Selecting & Integrating Online Tools for Language Teaching
In this workshop, language instructors will use free online resources to create materials for incorporation into their in-person, hybrid, and online courses. Technology selection and incorporation criteria will also be discussed. Come with the URL's of your favorite websites, and be prepared to use them in ways you never imagined! Please register in MyWorkshops. Presenter: Georges Detiveaux.
